What I used to want and what I want now – old versus new!

Sony-Apple

For me as a fan of many Apple products this was a week I was looking forward to for some time now. On the day of the “big news” I read a review about the Sony Ericsson Aino Touch Phone on Chris Rawlinson’s blog. It reminded me of the days when I was a huge fan of anything that was Sony and Ericsson. My first mobile phone in 1994 was a Ericsson GH377 which did not even allow SMS although it was very much the same size as most mobile phones now. Look at that beautiful little gadget:

thumbgh337I was living in London at the time and still vividly remember during a trip to Holland how a friend thought it was impossible to have a phone so small and thought it was some kind of practical joke, even after she made a call to one of her friends. Ten years later I bought a P910 and then a P990 with which I was able to listen to radio, take photos and browse the internet on a colour screen. Now, only a few years later all that is “normal” but then it was pretty revolutionary.

Nokia and (Sony)Ericsson were only a very short while ago the manufacturers of nearly all “must-have” phones but they have made way for Blackberry’s, Androids and iPhones. Although Nokia is still global market leader in mobile phone sales.

I think it is unbelievable that companies with such enormous resources and global reach do not seem to be able to compete with the three “newcomers” I mentioned earlier in the most lucrative segment of smartphones. Yes, the Aino and the N97 are great phones, yet they miss what they used to have and that is “I want that more than anything else”. It is somehow sad and I truly hope that my old favourite brands will capture my imagination soon again.

One of the reasons I wrote this blog post is that it reminds me that although things change in our lives, whether it’s a job, a relationship or something more trivial like a mobile phone, more often than not something better will come in the future.

Anyway, despite the iPad missing so much of what I hoped it would have “I want it more than anything else” at the moment. I just can’t wait to sit where-ever and read books, emails and Facebook , listen to music or watch a movie while chatting and calling my friends over VOIP with Nimbuzz.

Enjoy your weekend !

  1. So true about SE and Nokia, they maybe got too comfortable and then got caught out by Apple. I really hope with phones like the SE X10 and other manufacturers producing Android phones or similar, that we will get to see some more competition to the iPhone arena. Despite its shortcomings am also very keen to try out the iPad, think will have to get one sent over from the states as have a feeling they will be massively overpriced and delayed in SA.

  2. Luckily there will be thousands of Americans coming this way in June for the World Cup ….maybe we can start a little trade in iPads? I agree and really don’t think Core will be offering them for the US price of under R 4000 !

  3. [...] It is also interesting that LG and Samsung are growing their market share globally and mostly at the expense of the traditional large players like Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola who are all selling less phones than a year ago which I suppose underlines some finding in a previous post of old versus new.
